The next morning when Vasylyna woke up, she smelled the scent of a delicious wheat, honey, and poppy seed porridge and saw that Baba Yaga was already awake and cooking breakfast.

“Get up, girl. The day is short and the chores are long.”

As Vasylyna sat down to eat the porridge, she took a pinch and put it in her pocket to share with her motanka. Baba Yaga sat down across from her and sipped from a cup of hot herbal brew.

“So, I ask you again, do you come of your own free will or are you coming on someone else’s errand?”

At first, Vasylyna equivocated, but finally she confessed.

“My stepmother sent me to steal fire from you,” Vasylyna admitted, “but I would rather earn an ember than steal one. What can I do to get some fire to take back to my stepmother?”

“Fire is precious, and an ember comes dear. The fire that comes from my pich is no ordinary fire, girl. It is a powerful magical tool, not to be given out except to the most worthy.”

Baba Yaga looked her up and down.

“And it remains to be seen if you are worthy. However, I might have a few little chores around the home that you can do for me.”

Baba Yaga snatched up Vasylyna’s hand in her own bony one with the scraggly nails, brought her face down to look closely at the girl’s palms, and smiled.

“Hmph. I can see in your hands that you are hard-working, but let’s see if you are clever as well.”

She went back to holding her cup and inscrutably drinking her brew.

“You want some fire to take home, yes? But, my pich is so very hungry. And you might have noticed that my fence post is missing one lantern, too. So, how about we play a little game. I will give you a few small tasks to do. If you complete them, you will get a reward. However, if you fail, I will feed you to the pich and fill in that last lantern on my fence.”

There was no way Vasylyna could return to her stepmother without an ember, so, as intimidating as Baba Yaga was, what choice did she have except to agree to Baba Yaga’s game?
